What is NOx?

NOx is an air pollutant, namely nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2).

What causes NOx emissions?

Thermal NOx is caused by high temperature combustion of air in an internal combustion engine.

How much NOx does SCR remove?

NOxProtekt SCR system can remove upto 95% removal with our highest performance catalyst. For typical applications 85-90% reduction is achieved

Why is NOx bad?

The presence of NOx gases in local environments particularly cities are linked to respiratory problems and the onset of asthma. They also contribute to the formation of smog and acid rain in the atmosphere.

How can NOx emissions be reduced?

In lean burn combustion as is the fundamental principal to diesel & gas engine combustion processes the most effective technology for high performance NOx abatement is Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR).

What is SCR?

Selective Catalytic Reduction is a honeycomb fixed bed catalyst technology combined with an upstream reductant that is injected into the engine exhaust stream to cause a reaction with the NOx which results in the conversion of NOx into harmless nitrogen & water.

How does selective catalytic reduction work?

AdBlue which is stable reductant which can be safely stored and then injected to cause a pyrolysis reaction which produce ammonia inside the system which reacts with the NOx on the surface of the active honeycomb catalyst inside the reactor.

What are the risks of installing SCR?

Very close attention to ensure that the SCR system is located in the engine exhaust system to achieve the correct operating temperature window for optimum reaction with the NOx AND that the additional back pressure created by the presence of the SCR does not hinder the performance of the engine & turbos.

Can SCR be installed outside?

Yes NOxProtekt SCR system including control & dosing panels and field instrumentation is designed against water ingression to allow safe operation outside 24-7.

How long does it take to install an SCR NOx reduction system?

For the majority of single engine applications M&E installation can take 3-5 days with an additional day for commissioning with customer supplied load bank or export conditions. For multi engine sites (eg STOR or data centres) this period will extend to weeks. It is normal for NOxProtekt to undertake a site survey to determine the installation periods for optimum project management.

Can I fit NOxProtekt SCRs to my existing generating sets in-situ?

Yes. NOxProtekt Industry specialists will survey your site and engineer an optimised bespoke solution adapted specifically to your power generation site. We will handle all indoor and outdoor works, applying state of the art industry best practice to ensure a safe and reliable installation, whilst minimising any disruption to your normal operations.

Will NOxProtekt SCR systems work on any diesel generating set brand/model?

Yes. NOxProtekt specialists can engineer a solution to work with any diesel generating set make or model that you may have on site, and we can accommodate a mix of different machines on site. Our products are not off the shelf; Rather than providing a sub-optimal trade-off by installing the “closest fit” we will take account of each individual machine on site and create a bespoke solution that not only will work, but will be optimised to your specific machines.

If I choose NOxProtekt, how much downtime should I expect when installing the SCRs?

At NOxProtekt we understand that downtime means lost revenue, or worse, loss of critical back-up power to a critical site. For the majority of single engine applications M&E installation can take 3-5 days with an additional day for commissioning with customer supplied load bank or export conditions. For multi-engine sites (eg. STOR or data centres) this period may extend to weeks. It is normal for NOxProtekt to undertake a site survey to determine the installation periods for optimum project management. We coordinate our installation phases and daily works within agreed and scheduled shutdown windows to minimise and downtime impact our works may cause.

Will my generating set output de-rate with a NOxProtekt SCR fitted?

No. With 40 years’ experience in OEM engine testing and development embedded within our specialist engineering team NOxProtekt takes into account all critical aspects of engine performance when making our design calculations, matching each bespoke SCR system to your generating set, regardless of brand. We are committed to ensure optimum plant performance is maintained, and that your valuable assets are protected. The gensets will not suffer any loss of power and engines will remain protected as they will continue to run for many more hours of reliable service within their intended design parameters.

Will a NOxProtekt SCR damage my engines?

No. With 40 years’ experience in OEM engine testing and development embedded within our specialist engineering team NOxProtekt takes into account all critical aspects of engine performance when making our design calculations, matching each bespoke SCR system to your generating set, regardless of brand. We are committed to ensure optimum plant performance is maintained, and that your valuable assets are protected. What happens if my NOxProtekt SCR develops a fault, what back-up and support do you offer?

The NOxProtekt SCR system is proven for reliability, and we are confident that pursuing fault resolution will not be a major concern for you during ownership. However, in the unlikely event that a system fault of any description does occur please do not hesitate to contact the number on your product documentation (or on our website) and an experienced member of our customer care team will assess your fault description. If a fault cannot be fixed remotely we will despatch an engineer to your site for resolution. We offer lifetime support on our products so you can purchase with confidence that the system will continue to perform reliably.

Will NOxProtekt SCRs help me comply with MCPD or EA permitting requirements?

Yes. Our NOxProtekt SCR systems are specifically designed for this purpose. The presence of NOx gases in local environments particularly cities are linked to respiratory problems and the onset of asthma. They also contribute to the formation of smog and acid rain in the atmosphere. For this reason, specific legislation and requirements are in place to help reduce exhaust gas, including NOx, emissions, such as the Medium Combustion Plant Directive. In the UK, the Environment Agency enforces emissions requirements through a permitting system. NOxProtekt have 40 years’ experience applying catalyst technology within engineered solutions. The NOxProtekt SCR system can reduce NOx emissions by up to 95% using our highest performance catalyst. For typical applications a 85-90% reduction is achieved. Do NOxProtekt offer a turnkey supply and fitting service, or do I need to hire mechanical contractors and electricians to fit my new SCRs?

When you purchase a NOxProtekt SCR system your work ends when we receive your order. Unlike some competitors offering ‘supply only’ with off-the-shelf product options, NOxProtekt offers a complete turnkey supply and install solution which results in the price you pay being all-inclusive and highly competitive. We will complete the site survey and integrate fully with your facilities team, or your third party contractors, to deliver a seamless and trouble-free install. We supply all M&E staff to completely build, install and commission every product component without the need for you to arrange and coordinate separate contractors. We are ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified and given all work is conducted internally by NOxProtekt people as part of our turnkey solution, we can guarantee consistently high quality across the job. At the end of our install we will hand you the keys to your new, fully installed and fully functional SCR system, ready for many years of reliable and high performing service.

Do my staff need special training to operate a NOxProtekt SCR system?

No. Upon request, NOxProtekt can offer system induction training to your personnel. Anyone can operate the system, providing they are suitably skilled and experienced to be working within an industrial power generation facility in the first instance. We supply an easy to use product operation manual with the system providing details on how to perform system monitoring and minor system resets. All your staff will need to do is keep the AdBlue topped up and the NOxProtekt SCR system will automatically run itself without any further interaction from your staff.

If I buy a NOxProtekt SCR system, do I need to source additional components as well, such as AdBlue tanks from someone else?

No. All components of the NOxProtekt SCR system, including the AdBlue tank(s), are included within the system price (unless specifically requested otherwise at time of enquiry) – see also FAQ “Do NOxProtekt offer a turnkey supply and fitting service, or do I need to hire mechanical contractors and electricians to fit my new SCRs?”
